The question many people ask is whether the electric car is worth it or whether it is better to have a traditional internal combustion car with petrol, diesel or gas.

In recent years, these vehicles have seen electric models as rivals to be feared, whose presence is becoming more and more widespread around the world thanks to technical advances in the automotive sector and the increased focus on environmental sustainability.

As a result, consumer interest in electric and hybrid models has increased, and in Italy, too, more and more drivers are turning to the new sustainable mobility.

Precisely the electric car represents an important evolution in the way of getting around, and although more expensive than the traditional vehicle, it is certainly safer for the environment, as it guarantees clean, zero-emission mobility.

The main advantage and reason why the electric car is worthwhile compared to conventional vehicles is that it is green and can be recharged with renewable energy sources such as photovoltaics.

Who likes electric cars

In many countries, the electric car is already the norm, but the spread of electric vehicles depends on the incentive policy implemented by different nations.

 The 2016 OSCE/lea Global EV Outlook study shows that the countries with the most electric cars are Norway, the Netherlands and Sweden. These are followed by Denmark, France, China and Great Britain.

As far as Italy is concerned, the spread of plug-in cars has increased in recent years also thanks to the spread of recharging points in the road and motorway network, but there is still a long way to go. Who buys electric cars?

According to Ecoverso, a solidarity purchasing association founded in 2013, those driving electric cars in Italy are men (81% of cases) in the following age groups: %: 26% are between 35 and 44 years old, 35% are between 45 and 54 years old and 29% are over 55.

These are generally motorists living in northern Italy in the most urbanised areas and Milan leads the ranking followed by Rome.

The hope is that with the infrastructure plan and the construction of charging stations, the South will catch up with the spread of electric cars in the North. A curiosity: those who buy electric cars are enthusiasts and 50% are people in white-collar positions, of whom 33% are university graduates and 50% are engineers.

15% of those who choose to buy an electric car are part of a buying group in order to obtain discounts to be added to public and state incentives.

Pocket money: the advantages of the electric car

There are many advantages that an electric car offers to those who choose to invest in sustainable mobility:

  1. low environmental impact as they do not use fossil fuels and CO2 emissions are zero: an electric car is 100% sustainable as long as it is recharged with renewable sources such as photovoltaics;
  2. wide range of traffic possibilities including ZTL or restricted traffic zones;
  3. use of renewable sources for recharging, e.g. photovoltaic panels
  4. better performance of the conventional car, which is more responsive and quieter than the combustion engine car.

The costs of the conventional vehicle vs. the electric car

All that remains now is to investigate electric car prices and savings possibilities with the differences between petrol and electric cars. In general, an electric vehicle can save the user more than EUR 1,000 for the same mileage (10,000 km).

In the analysis, the average annual consumption of an electric car (powered by solar energy from photovoltaic panels) was compared to the equivalent of a petrol car.

 In particular, costs per kilometre travelled were taken into account with respect to the nature of the vehicle chosen, and fuel prices for Italy, France, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Poland and Germany were added to the equation.

For example, in Italy, charging an electric car is 14 times cheaper than filling up a traditional petrol car, so that the cost per user of a solar-powered electric car is only 0.84 cents per km, compared to 11.76 cents per km for a traditional car with a heat engine.

In addition, charging the car with a photovoltaic panel makes it possible to avoid energy increases, rely on energy independence and have a stable supply.

In the end, you have an annual expenditure of 1,176€ if you drive a petrol car and only 84€ if you drive an electric car charged with photovoltaics and solar panels placed on the roof of the house.

Alternatively, the electric car can be charged with the modern domestic wall box provided by DazeTechnology. A product completely designed and manufactured in Italy.
