Mode 3 Charging is only allowed in Italy for private charging and is prohibited for public areas. In addition to this, it is also restricted in the United States, Canada, Switzerland, Denmark, France and Norway and stipulates that single-phase vehicle charging cannot exceed 32 A and 250 V and three-phase charging cannot exceed 32 A and 480 V.

Mode 3 Charging involves charging the vehicle via a power supply system permanently connected to the mains. The Control Box is integrated directly into the dedicated charging structure. This is the way of wallboxes, charging stations and all automatic AC charging systems. In Italy, it is the only permitted way to charge a car in public places with alternating current.

Charging stations operating in mode 3 usually allow single-phase charging up to 32 A and 250 V, and three-phase charging up to 32 A and 480 V, although the regulations do not stipulate any limits.

Examples of Mode 3 charging proposed by DazeTechnlogy are DazeBox C and DazePlug, two charging systems developed by DazeTechnology. Although the former is manual and the latter automatic, both are designed to operate in mode 3.

What are the ways to charge the electric car?

Those who need to recharge their electric car can do so in two ways:

  • At home, using the home power grid;
  • Using a public charging station.

Depending on the choice, there are different types and speeds of recharging, and in 80% of cases the preference is to connect the vehicle to the household at night, in order to find the battery fully charged in the morning and to have the necessary autonomy for daily trips.

In addition to this, owners of electric cars can count on an ever-expanding network of electric charging stations and public charging stations to drive longer routes and have more autonomy by being able to charge the battery on the road.

Public charging stations offer AC Charging from a station or, in most cases, DC Fast Charging.

And both solutions are faster than home charging: Public AC Charging can be 3 to 10 times faster than Home AC Charging, depending on the capacity of the charging station and the vehicle’s ability to handle AC Chargers.

What is mode 3 charging and how does it work?

In order to benefit from mode 3 charging, it is necessary to be able to rely on fixed equipment even in the case of a home network, such as the Wallboxes offered by car manufacturers. If, on the other hand, recharging is public, then the post must be permanently installed and a Type 2 (Mennekess) or Type 3 (Scame) connector is used. The charging process can be up to 32 A 230V in single-phase or 32 A 480V in three-phase.

What are Mode 3 charging connectors and how are they used?

The reference standard for charging stations is IEC 61851-1, which provides for a ‘universal’ communication system between the station and the vehicle via a PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) circuit, which is necessary to guarantee the safety of the charging process, both for people and to prevent damage to the vehicle’s battery pack. o.

Mode 3 charging is the compulsory mode for public environments and specific connectors using the PWM safety system with slow or fast charging must be used. Four types of connectors are provided for charging AC electric vehicles (Mode 2 and Mode 3): Type 1, Type 2, Type 3A and Type 3C.

TYPE 1 is only found on the vehicle side. TYPE 2 is both Vehicle Side and Column Side. TYPE 3A and TYPE 3C are column-side connectors only.

There are two standards for DC electric vehicle charging (Mode 4): CHAdeMO and CCS COMBO2.
