Well-to-Wheel

The concept of “Well-to-Wheel” (WtW) refers to a comprehensive analysis of the environmental impact and greenhouse gas emissions of a vehicle throughout its entire lifecycle, considering all stages from raw material extraction to the use of fuel or energy in the vehicle itself.

This approach takes into account not only the direct emissions from a moving vehicle (referred to as “Tank-to-Wheel”) but also considers emissions associated with the production, transport, and distribution of the fuel or energy used by the vehicle (referred to as “Well-to-Tank”).

WtW analysis is essential for obtaining an accurate assessment of the overall environmental impact of different types of fuels or energies used in vehicles, as it takes into account all lifecycle stages and associated emissions. For example, in the context of electric mobility, WtW analysis would consider emissions generated during electricity generation, energy transport to charging stations, and the efficiency of the electric vehicle itself.

The WtW approach is useful for evaluating fuel and technology alternatives more comprehensively, helping to identify the most environmentally sustainable options in the realm of mobility and other energy applications.
